Our favourite surf and yoga retreat on the south coast

There is a gorgeous cove on the south coast where our friends at Soul & Surf have set up shop. We have sent people their way for a while now. Every one of them comes back saying the same thing: It’s a vibe!

Here is the thing about a surf & yoga retreat. A morning in the water, getting held under, paddling back out, finally standing up and feeling the board come alive under your feet, that does something to your nervous system. You come in buzzing and a little wrecked. Then you climb up to the rooftop, roll out a mat, and your body already knows what to do. The yoga lands deeper because you earned it in the surf. The surf gets better because the yoga taught your hips and shoulders how to move. They feed each other.

Soul & Surf understands this better than most. They have been running surf and yoga in Sri Lanka and Kerala for years, and you feel that experience the moment you arrive. The teachers are genuinely world class, the kind of people who can read where you are in the water and meet you there, whether it is your first time on a board or you are chasing cleaner lines. The hosts make their retreat like a house full of friends by day two.

The setting is an ocean front retreat in Ahangama, on the same coast as us. Rooftop yoga in the morning, surf when the tide is right, and a massage when your body asks for it. The food deserves its own paragraph honestly. The restaurant is one of those places where you sit down expecting a decent meal and end up planning the next one before you have finished the first. Fresh, local, properly good.

And then there are the nights. A few evenings a week the place turns into something else, a DJ, music, everyone who spent the day in the water now barefoot and laughing. It is like the natural overflow of a group of people who have been surfing, eating and breathing together all day and genuinely like each other by the end of it.

What we appreciate most, and what we think our people will too, is that they are not precious about it. As they put it themselves, if you want to laze in the pool with a piña colada that is good too. They are not too worthy. You can go as deep or as easy as you want. Some guests come for progression in the surf, some for relaxing, some just to switch off next to someone they love. The place holds all of it.

If you are already coming to Sri Lanka to train with us, or you are dreaming about it, a few days down the road at Soul & Surf is the kind of thing that rounds the whole trip out. Get in the water, eat well, sleep hard, and arrive on your mat with the salt still in your hair.

Go say hi to Soul & Surf in Ahangama. Tell them Senses sent you.
